Prof. Dr. Hk. Abdul Hannan,
Dean, Faculty of Eastern Medicine

The Faculty of Eastern Medicine which has its roots in Hamdard Tibbi College (since 1958) is the vision of Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said. It is therefore the oldest institution of Hamdard University and now enjoy the constituent status as a degree awarding institution. Reaching this stage entailed a long struggle which culminated in the year 2002, when the Federal Government amended the Unani, Ayurvedic and Homoeopathic Practitioners’ Act 1965 to recognize the Bachelor’s Degree in Eastern Medicine (BEMS) for registration by the National Council for Tibb. It is indeed a landmark in the history of Tibb in Pakistan when the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Islamabad approved the revised curriculum of Eastern Medicine for BEMS, M.Phil. and Ph.D. degrees in July 2004. The degree course is also approved in United Arab Emirates for the purpose of practise.

Eastern Medicine is practiced today in Pakistan, India, China, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. It is deep rooted in understanding the body as a whole and its treatment by natural way integrating it with the currently available diagnostic aids. Eastern Medicine today is contributing many clinical skills and it is cost effective and relatively its medicines are free of chronic side effects in recommended dosage forms.

Eastern Medicine physicians have the opportunity to serve, clean, purify and balance the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual planes of patients. The Eastern System of Medicine deals with the body as a whole and balance the disturbance in humors thus bringing health with its rational approaches. In this context the modern world is looking towards the Asian countries which possess effective knowledge of Traditional Systems of treatment. Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said visualized this degree program as well as research based integrated curriculum to fill the gap and produce Tabibs who are fully aware of modern diagnostic methods for treating diseases effectively.

Thus the main objective of the programme is to prepare graduates trained in Eastern Medicine and having first hand knowledge of the basic subjects of modern medicine. The program has high first hand knowledge of the basic subjects of modern medicine. The program has high potential for employment as well as for self-employment, is unique in its orientation and has been designed to develop advancement in the Oriental tradition of medicine on a broad based foundation of contemporary scientific knowledge. The global resurgence and acknowledgement of the natural medicine have greatly enhanced the significance of this programme.

The Faculty of Eastern Medicine re-affirm the commitment and the dedication to serve people for their health care with utmost zeal and pray to Allah to bless our endeavors (Amen)
