Hamdard Institute of Information Technology
An Over View
Hamdard Institute of Information Technology, commonly known
as HIIT, is a constituent institute of Hamdard University, Islamabad Campus
which came into being with the establishment of Islamabad Campus in 2000.
HIIT
initially offered programs in Computer Science, Information Technology and
Computer System Engineering, and our graduates have earned a high ranking
while competing for jobs in public as well as private sector organizations.
Later on, the institute introduced engineering programs in Telecommunications
and Electronics in 2003. The institution proved its credibility by getting
Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) accreditation with the condition of organizing
‘Remedial Education Program’ for the intakes of 2004, 2005 and 2006, for both
Telecommunications and Electronics Engineerings. The institute has so far
produced hundreds of quality engineers who are serving at various positions
within and outside Pakistan.
Programs
BE
(Electrical Engineering)
Recently, on the advice of PEC,
the two engineering programs (TE and EE) have been merged to form one program
as B.E (Electrical Engineering). This is applicable from the intake of 2007
and onwards. The institute is thus offering BE (Electrical Engineering) with
two streams i.e. Telecommunications and Electronics at present. Merging of
the two programs has widened the employment scope of our students, and their
skills would be better utilized in public as well as corporate sector.
Zero Semester: Under the provision of PEC policy,
the institute has introduced Zero Semester (16 weeks) from Spring 2010. This
policy allows conducting of Zero Semester for the students who obtain less
than 60 and more than 50 percent marks in F.Sc. Subjects of Mathematics, Physics
and English are taught in this semester and then a final exam is conducted.
The students who secure 60 percent or more marks in Zero Semester are declared
eligible to apply for the regular admission in the Engineering programs of
this institute provided they meet all other PEC requirements. This has afforded
the opportunity to those students who were unable to perform well in F.Sc.
due to some reasons or belong to such areas of Pakistan where
adequate education facilities are not available. The outcome has been very
positive and encouraging for both the parents and the institute.
BS
(Computer Science)
The BS (CS) is a four years professional degree program comprising the core
courses in science, mathematics, programming and computing. The program focuses
on instilling comprehensive Computer Science knowledge among students and
exposing them to issues involved in the development of scientific, educational
and commercial applications. An integrated approach to meet the hardware and
software needs of the industry is adopted using modern techniques to impart knowledge through
lectures as well as practical hands
on training in the labs. The curriculum is designed as per HEC recommendation
and provides core knowledge of specialized technologies. This program gives
students a solid background in the theoretical principles underlying computer
science and ensures that graduate acquire the intellectual tools necessary
to keep up-to-date in this rapidly evolving discipline. The degree program
endeavors to produce graduates who could pursue higher education abroad or
join the industry in the public or private sector enterprises.
The institute also plans to start B.S and M.S programs in
Telecommunications, Electronics and Communication and Networking in near future.
Laboratory
Facilities
Electronics Laboratory
The
Electronics Laboratory is equipped with a range of necessary equipment like
Oscilloscopes, Function Generators, Frequency Counters, assortment of tools
/ accessories and a variety of Digital/Analogue components. Workbenches, technical
books/manuals and engineering software are also essential constituents of
this lab. Assistance is provided to the students by Lab Engineer and a team
of qualified lab demonstrators under the supervision of faculty members.
These
facilities are used for practical work for subjects like Electric and Electronic
Circuits, Digital Logic, Computer Organization, Operational Amplifier etc.
Students also undertake projects and are encouraged to participate in Electronic/Science
Exhibitions.
Communications
Laboratory
The Communications Laboratory
has trainers for base-band communication, analog / digital modulation and
fiber optic communication. The experiments are supported by high frequency
signal generators, spectrum analyzers, antenna trainers and digital storage
oscilloscopes to perform time-domain and frequency-domain analysis.
Digital
Systems Laboratory
Digital System Laboratory provides experimental facilities to study microcontroller
and microprocessor systems. Microprocessor Training System is a modularized
approach to microprocessor concepts and applications. In addition to these training
aids, this laboratory is equipped with a universal programmer used to program
microcontrollers of different types as well as EPROMs’ trainers, data acquisition
cards, DSP starter kits, lab view I/O interface and digital oscilloscopes so
as to enable the students to perform laboratory projects and get hands-on training
employing latest technology.
Electrical
Machines Laboratory
This laboratory is equipped with
transformers, oscilloscopes, DC motors, generators, DMM, load units, galvanometers,
and photocell and resistance boxes to support lab work for Physics and Electrical
Machines.
Industrial Control Laboratory
Industrial Control Lab has been
established recently. The Lab is equipped with PLC trainers, Temperature Transducers,
Pentium IV machines and some modules like lift, DC motors, and communication
ports. This lab will facilitate performing experiments of instrumentation
and industrial electronics. Some robot kits have also been placed in the lab
for the final projects by the students.
Simulation & Modeling Laborator
This
laboratory is equipped with 25 dual core workstations with supporting software
like Synaptic CAD, Matlab, Auto CAD, Mitsubishi PLC Software for lab work
related to Signals and Systems, Digital Signal Processing, Industrial Electronics
and Control Systems.
Another microcomputer laboratory with
latest
workstations is available for programming courses, and to support class room
teaching, using necessary software tools.
Wireless Internet Access
Wireless internet access is provided in each of the campus building for internet
access to faculty and students.
Achievements:
HIIT IC Engineering
Programs gets Accreditation from PEC
Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) has granted conditional accreditation to
the engineering programs of HUIC. Remedial Education program for affected students
is organized as advised by the PEC. The Engineering Council accreditation will
not only facilitate the HU graduates in getting the jobs but also help them
in pursuing higher education at other universities within and outside Pakistan.
All students and faculty members are rejoiced over this achievement and consider
it a prominent milestone in the brief history of Islamabad Campus.
