The Faculty of Pharmacy was established in 1997 following the guidelines of the Founder Chancellor of Hamdard University, Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said.

In its early phase (1997-2001), the faculty developed Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programs in collaboration with Dr. HMI Institute of Pharmacology and Herbal Sciences.

In the light of recommendations of the Pharmacy Council of Pakistan and the Higher Education Commission, the faculty has undertaken, Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) Program in 2005, extending to five years exhaustive education and training in community oriented Clinical Pharmacy, Hospital Pharmacy, Forensic Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Marketing and Industrial Pharmacy.

The aim of the faculty is to provide high quality education with a commitment to produce competent Pharmacists and highly skilled/ Professional persons to take care of patients and also become the integral part of the healthcare system, both nationally and internationally.

Hafiz Muhammad Ilyas Institute Of Pharmacology and Herbal Sciences

Shaheed-e-Pakistan Hakim Mohammed Said firmly believed that “ IN THIRD MILLENNIUM THE HEALTH CARE WILL DEPEND ON HERBAL MEDICINES”. With this perspective, late Dr. Hafiz Muhammad Ilyas, former Managing Director, Hamdard Laboratories (Waqf) Pakistan established the Institute of Pharmacology and Herbal Sciences in 1990 to carry out research on Pharmacology and Toxicology of herbal drugs using modern scientific techniques. In 1993, after his demise, in recognition of his valuable services for Hamdard and Herbal Medicine in Pakistan, this institute was named as Dr. Hafiz Muhammad Ilyas Institute of Pharmacology and Herbal Sciences. Dr. Hafiz Muhammad Ilyas was a renowned physician and one of the pioneers, who paved the way of modernization of Unani Medicine and developed several new formulations of Unani Medicines. Dr. Hafiz.

Muhammad Ilyas played a pivotal role in the development of Unani/Herbal Medicine in Pakistan. Time has confirmed the vision of Shaheed Hakim Mohammed Said, and today, extensive research work worth billions of dollars is being done all over the world on herbs to find out effective and safe drugs at affordable prices for the treatment of common and presently incurable diseases.

His advocacy and determination convinced the World Health Organization (WHO) to declare wider use of herbal drugs to meet its declaration “Health for All by the Year 2000”.

The importance of Phytotherapy has increased steadily ever since. The Institute is currently involved in:

Providing and promoting facilities for advanced study and research in the fields of Pharmacology and Herbal Sciences.
Imparting teaching training and guiding in order to prepare candidates for M.Phil and Ph.D. degrees.
Promoting courses of further study and in-service training for those already engaged in medical sciences including Eastern Medicine.
Research output at the institute has resulted in peer reviewed papers published in England, Germany, Japan, Korea and Pakistan. Books have been published by Higher Education Commission, Muqtadra Quami Zaban (National Language Authority) and University of Karachi Press.
Further the Government of Pakistan has granted patent rights to four processes, developed by the institute in collaboration with HEJ Research Institute of Chemistry, University of Karachi.
United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has approved the Institute for visit under TOKTEN Program and a Professor from Temple University of Philadelphia (USA) has visited the institute for six weeks.
Senior Fulbright Scholarship has been awarded to one of its faculty members.
To date, several students have been awarded M.Phil and Ph.D. degrees on the research work done in the institute. Students are pursuing studies for their M.Phil and Ph.D. degree.
The institute conducts practical classes in Pharmacology for Pharm D. students.

Grading Policy

Terminal Examination

The examination held at the end of semester after the completion of a course shall be known as Terminal Examination. It will carry 100 marks. This examination is a passing head i.e., a student must for each course obtain a minimum of 50 marks in this examination.

Grading System

Grades given to a student in each course shall be of two types:

  1. Numerical Grade (NG)

Assessment of performance on the basis of marks out of 100 fixed for a course of 3 or 4 credit hours unit is NG.

  1. Alphabetical Grade (AG)

Equivalence of numerical grades in terms of alphabets shall be termed as alphabetical grades. (Each letter carries a value in terms of numerical points)

Incomplete Grade

For incomplete courses no point shall be given.

Grade Point Ratio (GPR)

Point obtained in each course shall be multiplied by the number of Credit Hours specified for that course, and then a grade point ration (GPR) shall be calculated. For example, the result of a last year student in a semester may be as follows:

Cumulative Grade Point

This is obtained by adding all the Grade Points of the courses during 5 years study period and dividing the totally by the total number of credit hours.

Computation of Semester Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)

Semester Cumulative Grade Point Averages (CGPA) will be calculated using the following relationships:
CGPA = Sum of (Credit Hours X GPA)/Total Credit Hours

CGPA Required for Degree Completion (Pharm.D / M.Phil)

For graduation, the minimum qualifying CGPAs for Pharm. D. and M. Phil. Students are 2.45.

Paper Viewing

Proper Paper Viewing has to be made mandatory before final submission of result to the controller of examination and its approval by the Faculty Board of Studies.
This would help in avoiding student’s grievances, biasness and calculation errors etc in the papers.

Requirement for the Award of Pharm.D Degree

For Pharm.D Students
  1. A student must have passed all prescribed courses.
  2. A student must have obtained a minimum CGPR 2.45.
For M.Phil Students
  1. A student must have a regular admission in the M. Phil program of the Institute, and should earn a minimum of 30 credit hours from the institute from where he/ she will be entitled for the degree. (24 credit hours of course work and 6 credit hours of research) .6 credit hours of research is mandatory for M. Phil level.
  2. A student must have obtained a minimum CGPR 2.5.
